  • What is Tuition Assistance?

Tuition Assistance is a Department of Defense benefit that you may draw on while an active duty serviceman. It is in place to help you with career and educational opportunities and it's a "use or lose" benefit. You do not pay into Tuition Assistance (as you do with your MGIB account). This money is paid directly into the program - you will never write us a check. The Department of Defense requires that you pass the course (whether it be this course or any other approved course) in order to utilize your Tuition Assistance dollars. In our case, that means you must pass the DMV test for a Commercial Driver's License. We ask for your commitment and dedication towards our program in order for you to successfully get your CDL. If your orders change and you can't complete the course, we'll work with you to reimburse your TA dollars. We're serious when we say NO COST.
  • What does no "out-of pocket" really mean?

No cost to you means full military tuition assistance of $4,500 per year. Our Commercial Driver's License program is operated in conjunction with our partner, Palomar College. Upon enrollment, our staff will provide you with Tuition Assistance forms to be completed, signed by your Command, and submitted to your Base Education Office for approval.

The Tuition Assistance provided to you by the Department of Defense is determined by your GT Score (Active Duty and Reservists). If you are a National Guardsman you will receive Tuition Assistance based on slightly different criteria, but again we will assist you through the entire process. Rest assured, we will never ask for funds from your pocket!
  • What is my GT Score?

Your GT Score is a measurement of your Verbal Expression (VE) and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) skills as assessed by the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. Your test score measures your General Technical abilities and will help determine your access to Tuition Assistance dollars.
  • How can I qualify with a GT Score below 100 points?

You can now qualify for Tuition Aisstance by taking the Test for Adult Basic Eduction (TABE) at the Camp Pendleton Joint Education Center, Bldg. 1331 every Wednesday at 1300. The test has a two-hour completion time and you will receive your test results the very same day. Once you have successfully passed the TABE, your present GT Score and TABE results will be added together to give you a new GT Score of 100 or higher. You can contact Jeff Caruth (TABE Proctor) at (760) 725-6660 for further information. For your convenience, the TABE can also be administered in the 53 Area, to set up an appointment please contact Maria at (760) 725-0606.
